For a private residence overlooking the salt marsh and Long Island Sound (designer: Kent Bloomer), Bloomer Studio designed and fabricated an elegant curved staircase. Made of hand-cast silicon bronze, the stringer features a lively, abstract pattern inspired by plant and marine forms. The brushed steel rails, which emerge from the stepped top of the stringer, are supported by curved bronze castings which echo the shapes in the stringer below. The pierced riser uses a similar theme of overlapping arcs, creating a geometric pattern recalling the work of Louis Sullivan. Imposing, yet airy and graceful, the warm glow of the patinaed bronze staircase is integral with the architecture, while alluding to the surrounding land and seascape.
