The Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center was renovated and expanded in 2008 by Centerbrook Architects and Planners, LLP. For the new entrance colonnade, Bloomerstudio designed a series of aluminum column capitals atop 20” circular brick columns. Inspired by the trajectory of a tennis ball, the tension of racket strings, and the pattern of mains and crosses in tennis webbing, the capitals are a visual clue to the energy and movement within the building. Taking hints from traditional Egyptian palmette basket capitals, the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center capitals contain two woven metal forms of different sizes. The outer basket coves the inner core like a dense net. Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center Capitals, Yale University |
