The Bloomer Studio completed the ornamentation of Chicago’s new public library (architect: Tom Beeby, Hammond, Beeby and Babka) in 1994 to widespread acclaim and recognition. This project illustrates the studio’s ability to inventively combine traditional architectural language with contemporary fabrication practices.

Bloomer’s contributions include a railing, seven large roof sculptures, and an entablature formed by spiraling leaves, circular shields, and spear-like mullions. The acroterion over the main entrance and the corner antefix feature cast aluminum owls, symbols of knowledge and learning, designed by Ray Kaskey, a former student of Bloomer’s. The owls in turn are surrounded by a fantastical environment of swirling seedpods, feathered helixes, and Greek palmettes. All elements are made from standard plate aluminum, although the standard stock has been cut, rolled, welded and painted to create exuberant and flowing forms that evoke the legacy of Louis Sullivan.
