Bloomerstudio designed and fabricated the roof ornament for Tuscaloosa’s new Federal Court Building, designed by HBRA Architects. The akroterions and antefixes are large, cast aluminum ornaments, contemporary descendents from classical Greek precedent. The eave akroterions are handed, with center stalks and scrolls rotating around the corner. The ridge akroterions feature a central urn with light-catching facets at the crest. The akroterions and antefixes contain an amount of demonism that is evident in their ancient ancestors. The ornament was intended to look as though it is simultaneously descending into and ascending from the architecture while also belonging to the building’s majestic, stately presence.
