BloomerStudio partnered with Newman Architects to win this competition for the renovation and addition of the Slover Memorial Library in downtown Norfolk, VA. The Studio designed and fabricated the foliated space frame and the façade ornament for the glass enclosed Forum, the leafed trellis on the Loggia Terrace overlooking the street, and the frieze in the Children’s Room. Formed aluminum shapes recalling sails in the wind frame the entrance in a dynamic composition that connects the renovated Seaboard Building to the new library tower. Stylized aluminum branches with hand-hammered leaves inhabit the Forum ceiling to create a canopy of reflected light and shadow. Similar elements reappear at the Loggia Terrace in an arboreal composition of choreographed branches and tendrils.
